‘He’s Got a Strange Accent’Boston Hires New Chief, an Outsider

Headhunters conducted nationwide search and included five internal candidates.

The Boston Globe has announced the new Chief of Department for the Boston Fire Department, Steve Abraira formerly of the Palm Bay (FL) Fire Rescue. Abraia will replace Chief Keating, who has reached the department's mandatory retirement age.

"Boston announced today that the city had hired its first Hispanic fire chief, tapping a career firefighter from Florida to lead one of the nation’s oldest fire departments."

"Steve Abraira, 56, will take over a fire department in Boston that has struggled with diversity. Abraira will not only be the first nonwhite man to serve as chief, he will be the first leader the department has hired from outside its ranks."
