P.G. Working:Children Rescued From Well-Involved 4th Battalion House Fire

First arriving crews were faced with heavy fire on Side Alpha and the family reporting kids still inside.

At approximately 0400 hours, on Wednesday 19 January, Communications dispatched companies to a house fire in the 4700 block of 40th Avenue, in Brentwood (Co.55). Firefighters arrived to find a two-story single-family dwelling with a significant amount of fire showing from Side Alpha.

Additional Details, HVFD Co.1:

At 0345 hours Truck 1 was alerted to respond to a house fire with reported people trapped at 4709 40th Avenue in Company 55’s area. Truck 1 responded to the call as a 1st due special service with 6 personnel. We arrived on scene right behind 55’s Engine. Upon arrival there was heavy fire showing from all of side alpha.

The Truck crew split crews to perform interior and exterior operations. The interior crew searched the first floor where a crew from Bladensburg’s Engine located and removed the first victim.

The Truck crew continued their search on the 2nd floor where the second victim was located. The interior Truck crew removed the unresponsive victim from the structure and began to perform CPR as the victim was transferred to EMS personnel on scene.


“Firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack on the fire and a search for the trapped occupants. Firefighters quickly located 2 females, one on the first floor and one on the second floor, and removed them from the house. They were quickly assessed as non-breathing and without a pulse and CPR was initiated. Paramedics provided pre-hospital care and transported the two sisters to area hospitals. Their condition this morning was reported as extremely critical and grave.”

The parents and two children, already outside, told firefighters of 13-year old twins still inside. The primary search quickly located the twins, one upstairs and one downstairs. Both were quickly turned over to EMS and transported to a local hospital. The two other children and parents were also transported for smoke inhalation. One firefighter also suffered a burn injury and was taken to Washington Hospital Center.
